Looking at people as particulars rather than as instances of a type is a form of attention that most people never receive. As with my middle schooler now, my practice with my ten PhD students was not just “leaving them intact”. My cultivation of them started from the other person’s shape rather than my own. Most people harm at least slightly by acting on a person before having seen that person. My skill is rare. A person who twice forwent status to access a good room over a mediocre room, I mentor through this skilled restraint.
